Just a quick follow-up to all my coverage in December to the factory sit-in in Chicago by UE Local 1110- Republic Windows and Doors has been purchased in bankruptcy court by a California-based company that has announced they will re-hire everyone who lost their jobs when Republic Windows and Doors was shut-down. The purchase of RW&D by Serious Materials also included negotiations with the UE, resulting in the company’s pledge to re-hire all of the former RW&D staff and to recognize the UE as representing the worker’s. “Our members are ready to get back to work and make great energy efficient green windows for Serious. We look forward to working together to create green jobs at living wages,” said Armando Robles, President of UE Local 1110. Congratulations out there folks, nice work.

Well, that’s good news. Let’s hope Serious is serious about their committment to the workers. They must be relieved as hell.

Maybe Obama’s stimulus plan is beginning to work after all. It’s good news. I like the emphasis on Green jobs. We’ll see.

Yeah, it’s a good-news story all around. I haven’t seen explicitly, but it does seem that Serious Materials intentionally went to the UE to negotiate the return of the RW&D workers- I don’t believe they were obligated to do so, since RW&D had closed and the workers were all laid off.
And yeah, Watercloset, I wonder if stimulus money was used as part of the deal, since the newly-opened factory will be making energy efficient doors and windows (ie, “green” products) and creating jobs to do so….
