Welcome to the official site of the Montpelier Men’s League’s Three Penny Pirates. Our previous sponsor, the Langdon Street Cafe, decided to pass on keeping us under their wing and so this year we’re excited to pull on the brown shirts for our new sponsor, the Three Penny Taproom! The 2009 season is now underway (check bellow for the schedule). And with the season underway, that also means the stat-geeks are out. A note on our stats- for the first year I’m not counting fielder’s choices as hits, instead moving a tad more professional and giving batters an 0 for 1 if they reach on a fielder’s choice. Rest easy though, reaching base on an error will still get you a hit in my book.
In the next few weeks, I’m hoping to move this site over to Three Penny Taproom’s website, where it makes a lot more sense. In the meantime, here ya go…

yeah winning is cool. i especially like that we hung tough defensively all game even though it was close, they never got that one good inning that always seemed to happen to us.
wes, where’s the updated stats? it’s already afternoon!

6/18 @ Everett’s
In the re-match against the only team we’ve ever won against, LSC demonstrated that it was not fluke: we can win games. Unlike last week’s pummeling, LSC’s bats we consistent but not explosive. The defense, however, showed its maturity and we held off a seventh inning comeback attempt to win our second game of the year, 9-8. Fast Five Eddie pitched a masterpiece, even catching one batter swinging for strike three. Dean went 4-4 with a run and an RBI, and for a while there, it just seemed like Jake was everywhere on the field at once, turning singles into doubles and making crucial put-outs from the field.
And despite the speculation, Lil’papi played and played well, even without his finger 100%.
Which was good, because in the first inning new pick-up Kevin went down with what looked like some serious hamstring/quad problems. I’ll get out the update as soon as I get it. Half an inning later I jammed my left thumb something good trying to tag out the sliding runner at second. It felt like an electric shock going up my arm: it’s swollen, bruised, and pretty certainly sprained. I’d say I hope it’s healed by next week, but, looking at the updated stats, and speaking with my coach’s hat on, I’ll just say: I’ll be back in the line-up when it’s completely healed.
6/18 vs Cad Cut
Game cancelled because the transformer blew on the lights. Make-up game will likely happen sometime in July. I’ll let you know.
And as for all you impatient stat-mongers: hey, despite what some may think, I do have to go to work! They’re updated now though- less than 24 hours later- so just settle down….

Stache McGee
Scott “HoJo” Kerner is creeping up on me. I’m trying to win the batting title. Maybe I can play a little infield with your injury and Hojo being on hiatus for a few weeks.
June 20, 2008 at 7:38 am
whats with all the alias names?how will I be able to keep track of all you ?
Whoa Stache Mcgee who’ve got 13 LSC bangers right on your doorstep, I believe its a little early to talk about the batting title.
Maybe we should strive for .555 as a team.

Will Clark
Bring those LSC bangers to my doorstep.
I’m just trying to live up to being called a “key pickup.” It’s never too early to talk about a batting title, especially with such a short season.
How’s your finger, Jimmy?

Check the latest standings up top- we’re a week or two away from being middle of the pack! Someone should ask Stephanie next they see her at the Cafe how Kevin’s doing and get the news posted up here (I’m counting on you Fast Five); I don’t have a phone number for him.
In the meantime, I’m officially on the 10-day DL, retroactively beginning last Wednesday… this thumb is definitely not working properly.
Have fun out West Mud Shark. Mr Clark, any word on whether or not Jason will be able to make it the next few weeks?
June 21, 2008 at 12:46 am
Tony Gwynn
I’m pretty sure that Jason will be able to make the next few games. He’s a good shortstop, and I can play 2B while you, our player/coach, rests your injured thumb.

Yo Coach,
There are some games that are inconsistent that are listed differently on the paper schedule versus the online one above. Which schedule is correct?
Thanks,

All right Lingdon homies… This is my last post before leaving for a week to attend the West Coast Invitational Beer-League Slow-Pitch Softball Base-Running clinic. I have the need for speed. I am comfortable in saying that in the three games I’ll be missing, that the team will win at least two, probably three. When I get back, double-header against American Legion….two more w’s. So, Good luck homies, I’ll be checking in while I am smoking a cuban and sitting in the hot springs. hahaha.

Wes, you have the skills that pay the bills. Thanks for calculating OBP and SLG for us. Try calculating OPS (On-base plus slugging). I bet that Jimbo kicks the shit out of all of us. He’s the man.

BTW, update on Kevin is that he’s fine – had trouble walking for a day or two, and then was OK. Seems he just pulled both those muscles at the same time…
So, heads up to all you young guys to get in shape like fast eddy….cigarettes, booze, organic food and young women – that’s the secret to success!!!
lookin’ forward to a kick-azz pitching outing tomorrow – Casella is way beatable, and I hear that Sarducci’s/Utton’s are the biggest bunch of a-hole wanna-be jock rednecks in the league…”would you like a muffler with your Fettucini Alfredo?”
Let’s make ’em choke on their pasta and fumes…

Awesome. I love playing wiffle ball. I’ve rarely lost a game. We can talk about it tonight.
Let’s hope that Kevin and Wes are only on the 15-day DL, which is an eternity in a short season league. Maybe they should only be listed day-to-day.

6/25 @Casella
Zzzzzzzz…. That would be the sound of our offense, which slept through seven complete innings before losing 13-2 to the entirely beatable Casella’s team. For some reason, we just can’t seem to do anything against their ace pitcher Joe Mullins. Lil’Papi did manage a 3-3, 1 run game, but otherwise, there’s little to report here. I sat-out with my injured thumb and bruised rib, but looking at the season stats, we know that only helped our chances at the plate. Lets just hope that we either find an answer to these guy’s, or don’t have to face them in the playoff.s
6/25 vs Sarducci’s/Utton’s
This just may go down in history as the closest, most fun 12-run loss in softball history. In what was quite possibly our best single inning ever, we came out in the first against a very athletic S/U team and took a 7-1 lead, with all our guys getting to the plate and, in a LSC first, they went to their bullpen in the first inning following Colin’s monstrous 2-RBI triple. Unfortunately, we then went on to strand 11 runners and lose 23-11. Things got a bit heated in the fifth, with us down 19-9, when, with runners on first and second ump Sweeney (who was in a particularly light-hearted, jovial mood) called, a bit under his breath, an infield fly rule. The S/U player than made the somewhat weak choice of not bothering to catch it- in fact, moving out from under the ball. Our base-runners, who couldn’t even hear Joe’s call, panicked at the drop and took off, allowing them to grab an easy (and pretty weak) double-play.
I, for one, got a bit mouthy after that one. Sweeney made the right move by immediately calling the VT ASA commissioner, who insisted Joe made the right call. Not that it would have mattered much, being down so bad so late, but the whole play stunk pretty bad. To S/U’s credit, they were pretty tolerant of our shit-talking and our outrage.
Like I said above though, this game was much closer than the score shows, and we’ll be looking to pull-off the upset next time we meet these guys.
Of note were Ryan’s 2-4, 2 RBI, 1 run, 1 double performance, Clancy hitting 3-4 with 4 RBI’s, 1 run, and 1 double, and Jim’s 4-4, 2 run, 2 double game, which put him an impressive 7-7 on the night. Actually, pretty much everyone hit well. Also of note, our fans fucking kick ass. Once again, we had a loud, enthusiastic bleacher full of great support. Ump Sweeney remarked to me as they turned up the volume for the late-game rally (which we didn’t pull off): It’s like Langdon Street Nation whenever you guys play- jesus! Higgins should write an article on that“.
note: the printed schedule is the right one; I’ve fixed the one on this site and it should be right now too.

I’m w/ my man D on this one- any chance of rescheduling w/ Computer Barn – perhaps a double header w/ them and Cad Cut, as we have to make that one up, too…
I’ll let ya know as soon as I do about my potential Montreal plans…

I could try to put in a call to Computer Barn’s front office as well as the league hierarchy, but my coaching instincts (um, who knows if that’s legit) are to play with what we’ve got. Maybe Doug’s feeling better or maybe Mark’ll be around.
I do know this: Jerry never cancelled a show just ’cause he realized Bobby couldn’t sing.

6/29 vs Computer Barn
It would be easy to make excuses for this game with our two top hitters (Lil’Papi and Clancy) out of town. However, the sad truth is that we managed to go only 7 for 21 in losing 12-0 in six innings- and 5 of those 7 hits came in the first two. Despite Fast Eddy pitching quite a gem and some seriously impressive defensive plays from Don at third, Jason at short and Borderpunk at first, the fact is that nearly all of our contact went right to them, and all (or, most) of their contact went right to the holes. With the lowest average of any of our starters and nearly .250 bellow what I hit last year, there are really no excuses for me, though for tonight mine is at least decent: I now know why the big leaguers take a shot of painkillers before they hit the field with something like a broken finger. Lets hope for Wednesday’s game we field enough guys so that this Pete Rose can sit- not only because my season-long slump is getting embarrassing, but also because my left thumb is literally twice the size of my right thumb right now.
As for the Black Door on Wednesday, I smell upset….

7/3 vs The Black Door
What a heartbreaker…. Going into tonight’s game against a League power-house like these guys, few people would be inclined to give us a chance, especially with Scott and Clancy still out. The Black Door has made a habit this year of mercy-ruling a lot of teams- a lot of teams much higher in the standings than us. But on the back of some incredibly solid defense and some clutch heroics, we took this game into eight innings before falling 6-5 with the tying run at third and the possible winning run at first.
Jake and Kevin both pulled out great catches in the outfield, only to be over-shadowed late in the game when Jeff made two simply spectacular grabs in one inning. But things really got going in the seventh.
In the top of the inning, I benched myself from second base after a routine ground-out seriously re-aggravated my sprained left thumb. In reality, I shouldn’t have been playing at all, but I thought I could pull it off and for the most part did. Until this play. We got to the final half of the seventh down 5 to 2. Then, something incredible happened: our bats woke-up. First Jeff hit a clutch RBI single. Then, with two outs and runners on second and third, and down by two, Jake stepped to the plate (skipping me, since I had been pulled from the lineup). The ump, however, got it wrong and said that I had to be either pinch-hit for or I was automatically out. This, of course, is wrong and after the game League Commissioner Gus clarified that the ump got it wrong. But that was after the game.
So with the game on the line I stepped up to the plate, literally unable to grab the bat with my left hand so instead just resting it in my palm and using my right hand entirely to hold the thing. I’m pretty sure that without the injury I would have popped the ball to left-center and been out. However, practically swinging one-handed, the best contact I could make gave me a weak blooper that landed for a 2 RBI single and a tie ball-game. Excitement, and momentum, was ours.
In the top of the eighth innings we gave them a run. Not bad- one run- but it meant we needed another miracle. In the bottom of the inning, Lil’Papi started us off with a single, and then advanced to second on Jason’s pop-out. Deaner walked (that’s a team-leading 5 walks this year) but was out on a fielder’s choice that put Ryan at first and the tying run at third. But it just wasn’t meant to be and Fast Eddie, who pitched another great game, grounded out to end it. Bummer. We played a fucking awesome game though, and play these guys again in two weeks.
But next week might be our two most important games of the year, as we simply cannot let ourselves be the American Legion’s first win of the year.

Last night at the Dog River Park in the capital city of the Green Mountain state the American Legion ended its winless streak at 12 games. They battled back against FSV to then go ahead in extra innings and secure their first victory. Led by pitcher/slugger Joe Astick who pitched a great game and also hit the game tying home run drive to the right center gap. The Legion satiated their hunger with their first victory. Tonights doubleheader with the infamous LSC Tigers should be a exciting.

7/10 vs American Legion (doubleheader).
Buddy Harrelson here; you know, the guy the Mets hired after they mindlessly fired Davey Johnson in 1990 because, even though they won a ton and contended for championships, the Mets just couldn’t win it all? Yeah, well, Lingding Tiger ownership has asked me to give tonight’s recap- just in case, to try it out in case the managerial job becomes open in the near future.
LSC stunk it up tonight! The American Legion, who won their first game just the night before in extra innings, made LSC struggle to look like an all-men’s team. In game one, it was decent defense (um, but certainly no bragging) followed by absolutely no offense. Expansion team 7, Langdon Street 1. Yuck…. The last time I saw offense this bad my grandpa broke his ankle- at 75 years old- trying to beat-out a single while playing whiffle ball with me and the other grandkids on a hot summer day. The only notable stat comes from “Choo-Choo” Lil’Papi “Jimmybeatboy” Ma-loi, who officially ended his monstrous every-game-we’ve-ever-played-in hit streak.
Game two started ominously, as we gave-up a quick two only to follow by scoring zero, despite having the bases loaded with only one out. However, the bottom of the order came through and kept us in it. While the starting one-through-seven hitters decided to go only 10-26 (.385) with one RBI and one run, our bottom four guys pulled off an impressive 8-12 (.666) evening, including Colin’s 3 for 3, two run game (a part of his retarded 6-6 for the night) and the DH’s own 2 for 3 (double, triple), 3 RBI, 2 run, “yeah, thanks for finally showing up this year” performance.
And it was the DH’s heroic 2-out, 2-RBI triple that brought LSC back into the game in the bottom of the fifth and set Jake “Bruce” Field-man up to drive in the tying run. However, after “SK” Scotttafari Brocious Kerner’s lead-off home run in the bottom of the eighth we failed to get the tying run and lost in extra innings, cementing out place all alone at the basement of the standings for at least one week.
Many of your contracts, mind you, are up for renewal next year (yeah, including the coach’s).

7/17 vs Computer Barn
I feel like I’ve already lead-off too many game re-caps with this line, but once again it’s true: not much to say about this game. Our defense wasn’t all too bad, we just got stung for a few good hits and didn’t make the key plays that had to be made in order to get these guy’s out. Once again, our bats somehow fell silent (despite our team batting average sitting over .500) and LSC lost 12-1 on a boring 14 for 31 team hitting effort. A quick nod goes to Travis, my brother, for popping out in his guest at-bat as DH in the third.
7/17 at Black Door
It was last February when Boston Celtic fans were first heard chanting their montra: “Beat LA! Beat LA!”. I, for one, think it’s time LSC fans start with their own “Beat Black Door! Beat Black Door!” chants. After toughing through an extra-innings loss to these guys last time around, we almost came through again to upset the league’s number two team- but ultimately fell short 7-5 after their top of the seventh rally.
Up 3-1 for much of the game, Lil’Papi “Choo-Choo” came through with some serious late game heroics and broke out of his mini-slump with a 2-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to put up ahead 5-1 heading into the final inning. However, in classic LSC melt-down style, we gave-up 6 in the top of the seventh and weren’t able to recover.
Fast Eddy, who pitched two simply spectacular games, first got bothered by a line-drive that bounced off his left middle finger. Then, in the seventh, badly jammed his shoulder while (unsuccessfully) diving back to second on a pop-fly. The only other notable offensive performance came from Jason, who after noting to management that he does much better for his other team while hitting in the number two slot, went 3 for 3 with a double, a run and an RBI. If the playoffs started today, it would be LSC vs Black Door. If that’s how it’s going to be, I think we just might find ourselves in the winner’s bracket come playoff time, because despite falling short both times this season, I’m willing to say that we have these guy’s number.

8/11 vs McGillicuddy’s
The big story to start this game was that LSC was short-handed, employing FSV Coach Jeff Fothergill to play catcher and Jason’s brother in-law to come out at the very last second to play first base, as Dean’s no-show meant an end to his LSC-record 45 straight games starting at first base (somewhere, Cal Ripken Jr is not impressed). The even bigger story came in the top of the second inning, when the team’s second-best batting average and near shoe-in for most improved player of the year award Colin broke his ankle trying to beat-out an infield grounder. As luck had it, the Computer Barn’s Kevin White showed at just in time to replace Colin in the line-up for the night, but as for the rest of the season and the playoffs, Colin is a serious loss for the team.
As for the rest of the game, it was close, in fact, very close, most of the way. Up 5-4 going into the sixth, we gave them 5 runs that we weren’t able to get back and lost another close one, 9-5.
8/11 @ FSV
Still short a guy, we traded FSV’s Jeff, who expertly caught for Fast Eddy in the earlier game, for ‘Cudy’s Will, who was kind enough to take the role for this game. Still without our complete team and with stand-in’s Robert at first base and Kevin W. in RF, this game woulda coulda shoulda been but wasn’t. Close all the way through, I managed to miss an entirely un-miss-able line-drive right to me in the seventh that would have given us the 4-3 win. Instead, they tied the game and with rain falling sometimes heavy, sometimes lightly, this nearly 2 1/2 hour 10-inning marathon ended in a devastating 10-4 manner. I literally woke-up with morning with a startle, seeing the ball lining straight at my face. Another serious heartbreaker.

playoff picture
The playoffs will start next Monday, 8/18. We won’t know who we play until after Thursday’s games are all done, but for those of you unfamiliar, the playoff format is a double elimination, with the top three teams from the regular season receiving a first-round bye. That means Parker’s, the Black Door, and TDS Telecom have already secured the top three places, and last place plays forth place, etc. If the standings don’t change at all this week, we’re set to play Computer Barn in round one. Following round one, each team moves into either the winner or loser brackets, and goes from there.
Now, there are two possible scenarios I’d really like to see. The first would be that FSV moves up into forth place (assuming we stay in last) so that we can play them in round one. After Monday’s 10-inning mud-a-thon, I’d love to upset them in the playoffs and send them into the loser’s bracket. Scott, who we picked-up in the off-season from FSV, would probably love to see us send them packing in round one as well. The other scenario which would bring this match-up about would be for FSV to remain where they are in the standings (sixth) and the American Legion and Everett’s to both lose whatever (if any) games they have left this week and for us to win all 4 of our remaining games. This would also put us against FSV on Monday.
If I’m not mistaken, the first seed (at the moment, Parker’s) gets reign over the loser’s bracket while the second and third seeds have to duke it out in the winner’s bracket. Considering our two extra-inning near-misses against the Black Door, I’d much rather see us into the winner’s bracket than the loser’s, where we’d have to play Parker’s, who we simply don’t match-up well against.

yeah, Don’s been on fire and went 8 for 10 this week.
I’ll get to writing up the games tomorrow, now I just wanna talk stats. The best part of teams sports, of course, are the individual stats. Everyone knows we beat ‘Cudy’s 10 to 4!!! We also lost to Sarducci/Utton’s 12-0; Yesterday we got crushed in the first game against TDS 15 to 3 and then took a 6-5 lead into the last inning in the second game but lost 9 to 6.
The front office tells me I saved my job partially due to the third win (thanks guys) but mostly because when you look at those team leader categories, you see free agent pick-ups Scott, Jason and Don all over the place; including the aforementioned batting crown that Don stole away from Colin just this past week (sorry Clancy, it might of been yours, but ya can’t just take the team lead in avg and then travel the world and not defend your place at the top- we developed a highly scientific method for minimum AB’s needed, taking your number of AB’s directly into consideration).
That’s right, if management is going to take the heat when we’re losing, management sure the hell is going to take all the credit for what goes right.
And of course, I can’t look at the team leader stats and not notice Jim got himself placed in each category, and Jake managed to place first or second in all but one. I for one wouldn’t expect anything else.
As for myself, despite Dean’s month-long slump I easily won the coveted “worst turnaround” award for dropping 224 points from my .545 avg last year (when I barely lost the batting title to Dean). Just in this past week have I been able to get my average up in the .300’s; pathetic.

OK, the playoff schedule has been announced, and the short of it is that we play Computer Barn on Monday, August 18 at 5:45 on the grass field. If we win that game, we play Tuesday at 5:45 also on the grass field against the winner of the Everett’s-FSV game. If we lose Monday to Computer Barn, we play the loser of the Everett’s-FSV game Tuesday at 7:00 (again, on the grass field- which means we get to avoid the left field swamps of the lit field!).
If we win in our second game (against either Everett’s or FSV), we play next week as well. Seeing that we just lost a 10 inning heartbreaker to FSV on Monday (and an 8-6 squeaker against them back in May), and that we beat Everett’s twice this season, I’m feeling very good about our chances of making it into the second round.
So win or lose on Monday, Tuesday will be our chance to either exact our revenge on FSV or institutionalize our domination of Everett’s; either way, lets extend the season another week or two!

i had to flee to montreal to escape the shame of falling .150 points from my batting crown of last season to this season’s slump. time to put the season behind me and come out strong for the playoffs; i think we can make it past the first round this year; i will be back monday evening ready to kick butt and win some. oh yeah stats junkie, i think i should have 6 walks on the season with my walk in our victory the other night; leading the team in walks is my only claim to fame i have left after not hitting for a month and ending my 45 game streak of playing every inning of every game!

Playoffs Game 1- 8/18 vs Computer Barn
Ugh. Nothing good to say here folks. I led-off with a double, and after that, we got no-hit. 12-0 bad guys. After Everett’s huge upset of FSV, we play them tomorrow 8/19 at 7:00. Time to show up, or go home until next year. Bring yr friends.

Ah, good call Lil’Papi…. if you read this, and remember, lets be sure to invite everyone tomorrow to the banquet. Also, word on the street is that a camera is coming, which means a team photo and individual pics for baseball cards!!!!
With the “win or die” push on, here’s the preliminary post-season line-up for Tuesday against FSV (who, I’ll remind you all, we lost to in 10-4 in 10 innings just last week, and also come within 8-6 early in the season):
Scott RF
Jason SS
Jake LCF
Jim RCF
Don 3B
Dean 1B
Ed P
Ryan C
Jeff LF
Wes 2B
If Kevin or Clancy H. shows, the first one there has DH, right between Jeff and me. After we’ve taken a sizable lead, I’ll pull myself and start playing around with positions/batting order.
If we win, we get ‘Cudy’s Wednesday (and if you forgot, we just beat them last week!!!)…. so lets go Lingdon! Softball into next week- I’m not ready to be done!!!

Oh, and the preliminary plan is for a team/community BBQ/picnic/party at my house in Middlesex either Saturday 8/30 or Sunday 8/31, probably staring 3pm-ish… bring the fam, the friends… pretty much any and every thing except your dog (unfortunately, my dog will eat your dog- he loves people and kids though!). Date/time/details will be confirmed in the next week or so. Whiffle ball, Bocci, grills, swimming…. I’ll let you know.

OK, OK, all the stats are up. It took so long because it was hard to bring myself to do it, knowing I’ve got to wait until May to have any more stats to crunch; as if somehow not doing it would mean it was always there for me, in the future…
I know I’ve slacked on game reviews the last couple weeks- oh well. You were there.
And as far as those stats all go, there’s a ton that could be said. As I’ve noted before, Don, Jason, and Scott are all over those team leaders, as well as Jake and Jim of course. Jeff got hot those last two weeks and shot himself up in average (he was hitting with me in the .300’s most of the year!). And those playoff numbers are crazy! the bottom of the line-up really stepped it up and came through, which is always awesome. The top of the order’s playoff woes probably have more to do with defenses stepping it up at the top of our order.

thanks wes for the career stats! awesome! please explain to this stats novice what the “sig %” is?
August 26, 2008 at 11:25 pm
wdh3
“Slugging %”; your Batting Avg is your hits divided by your at bats (walks don’t count as an at bat in scorekeeping). Slg % is your total number of bases divided by at bats (so, if you go 1 for 1, but your hit is a double, your slugging % is 2.000%, i.e., for every at bat you get 2 bases; if you go 1 for 3 but your hit was a double, your slg % is .666%- 2 bases for 3 at bats).

5/18 vs FSV
Well, in our season opener, we looked about as rusty as we could. A slightly younger and faster than last year FSV team took us down handily, 13-5. We were missing some key guys, like Jason, Clancy and Jeff. In their absence we had our moments- I made a great stab of a catch over at second and Scott turned the year’s first double play. And then there’s the slightly suspicious first inning in which two close plays in the field went their way- from the one ump who clearly holds a grudge and just doesn’t like us…. I mean, he even threatened to take our beer away at the start of the game! It was also convenient for him to pull the old “the batter stepped on the plate” rule out of his ass. Anyway, a loss is a loss and the ump didn’t lose this one, we did. But he certainly didn’t do us any favors.
5/18 @ Grantite Hills Credit Union
Don’t be fooled, Granite Hills isn’t a new team but rather is the old TDS. And their bats and sureness in the field reminded us quickly. We didn’t hit jack, and didn’t get our last 2 innings of hits after the mercy rule came in and we called it a game 13-1 after 5 innings. Not much more to say, except I don’t look forward to playing these guys again anytime soon.

6/1 doubleheader vs Total Destruction
Again we played with a ragtag lineup that was missing Jason, Dean, Ryan, Clancy, and (until half-way through the second game) Jim. But both of these games were ours- until one bad inning in each game lost ’em.
In game one we hit uncharacteristically consistent- scoring 2 in the second, third and sixth innings and putting 3 runs on the board in the fifth. Nine runs was certainly a better showing than the 6 we put-up in our first two games of the year, but we never did better than tying it at 7 and eventually went down 13-9. We were led by Mark’s 2 for 2, 2 walk, 2 double, 2 RBI, 2 run performance and Scott’s 4 for 4, 2 runs scored game.
In the second game Scott kept at it, improving his season average to an absurd .857 by going 3 for 4 with a double, an RBI and 2 more runs scored. I added my own 3 for 4, 2 double, 2 runs, 4 RBI game to try to make up for some serious fielding blunders and in fact, we continued to hit great. In the third we scored five runs and two guys hit twice; then in the sixth we scored five more- none of which was enough as one bad inning in the field in the sixth gave them nine runs and a 14-10 win. A lot of guys had a good game at the plate, and in fact everyone got at least one hit in that second game (the Ellis Sports Bureau is checking, but this is believed to be a team first). Of note is Lil’Papi’s stat-padding arrival halfway through the game, going 2 for 2 with a run, an RBI, and a triple. Joe went 2 for 3 with a walk and an RBI and Mark capped off his solid night in the clean-up spot going 2 for 4 with another double, a run and an RBI.
Next time, let’s close ’em out and get the wins.

6/10 vs Computer Barn
We started off strong against one of the best teams in the league, scoring one in the first and one in the third to hold a 2-0 lead going into the fourth. Of course, in slow pitch softball there’s maybe two, three times all year in the whole league when two or three runs will win it for you. After allowing one run through in the forth, they swamped us for four runs in the sixth, largely off of one bases loaded triple. And despite having our big bats up for the sixth, we only came off with one run and eventually lost 6-3. It was nice to finally have Jason in the lineup, who put in a nice 3 for 3, 1 Run, 1 RBI game. Scott and Joe continued their monster season’s, each going 2 for 3 with a double (plus an RBI for Joe and a Run scored for Scott). Three runs, however, isn’t apt to win too many games.
6/10 @ Everett’s Insurance
Having won our first game ever last year against Everett’s, and then beating them in the playoffs too, we felt pretty good going in to this one. Sure, Jason had to leave between games, and sure we watched them pull a mighty upset over Computer Barn in the 7:00 game, but come on, we’ve got to get some of the breaks sometimes, right?
Well, in theory, I guess. We certainly hit better than in the night’s earlier game, but giving them six runs in the first meant we were playing catch-up all game, which just isn’t our strong-point (yet). Down 7-0 after two innings, we crawled our way back with three in the third, another in the forth, and then two off of Jake’s 2-run HR in the fifth. Now down only one run, for some god forsaken reason we let them snag three insurance runs in their half of the sixth, so rather than coming up in the top of the seventh- with the top of our order due up- looking for just a run or two we fell into the much harder to fight out of hole of needing four to tie. Which we didn’t. Jake padded his stats, going 2 for 3 with a HR, 2 Runs, and 2 RBI’s, as did Don (4 for 4 with a Run and an RBI) and Joe (3 for 4 with 2 RBI’s) but none of it mattered much as we lost yet another heartbreaker, 10-6.
One of these days that “one bad inning” we always give up will be for two or three runs instead of these crushing five, six, seven run innings that keep burying us. And hopefully about the same time we’ll start putting up nine, ten, eleven runs a game instead five, six or seven. I firmly believe we have all the pieces and the talent- if only they’d all show up on the same days.
June 18, 2009 at 4:19 pm

6/16 @ Sarducci’s/Utton’s & vs Parker’s
Coming into a double header against the top two teams in the league there was plenty to doubt, but some rays of hope: we finally had our whole team together. Well, almost… Cinco Loco was out with a back injury. No matter, despite some early control problems, Clancy D. stepped in and pitched well-enough to allow our increasingly tight D the opportunity to hold both these monster teams to 10 and 6 runs, respectively. But despite having a line-up jam-packed with able hitters, we only put-up 2 runs each game.
It’s around this point in the season (0-8, last place) that the front office (that would be me) begins having long, afternoon meetings with the coaching staff (that too would be me) about getting things right, and the fragile state of job security in this market.
