Welcome to the official home of the Montpelier Men’s Softball League’s Langdon Street Cafe (unofficially known as the Lingdon Tigers). The season is underway and on the verge of hitting full stride. Come back often for game results and player stats. Go Lingdon!
Last year’s dismal inaugural season, in which we failed to win a single game, is behind us now. In the off-season, we made several key pick-ups: Clancy, who did play one game with us towards the end of our season, Don, who Ed apparently invited to join us in a drunken Charlie-O’s stupor, and Scott, who was picked up as a free agent from FSV (Fothergill, Segale, & Valley). These pick-ups, along with others made through the course of the season (like Jason and Kevin) should make sure we win at least some of our games. And of course, we’ll be looking to defend our unofficial title as League leader in BPG’s (Beer’s Per Game)- a stat that I’m sure had nothing to do with our audacious record. If only we could keep Jason from trying to bat lefty….

5/12 vs Parker’s (scrimmage)
Though 5/12 was only a scrimmage, LSC looked great at the plate- in the field, some questions remain however. Parker’s didn’t bother keeping track of their runs, though it’s probably safe to say that in the end they beat up by at least 4 or 5 runs. It was a good, close game though.
I won’t bother with noting the late inning position changes, as there were many. Over the next couple of weeks, hopefully we’ll be able to secure a solid fielding lineup. In the meantime, the box score looked like this:
Name AVG Hits AB RBI Runs HR 2B 3B K Walks
Wes 1.000 2 2 1 2 0 0 0 0 0
Jason .333 1 3 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 0

OK, so I’ve obviously got some work to do to figure out the best way to format these stats from Exel…. don’t worry, I’ll figure it out (it is, afterall, what I do for a living). Those of you obsessed enough (I know you’re reading this Jim) will be smart enough to decipher the above stats.

5/14/ vs Everett’s (scrimmage)
Our bats were a bit slow in the begining of the game, but woke up towards the end. Unfortunetly, it wasn’t enough to overcome their run production. As with our previous scrimmage, Everett’s didn’t bother keeping track of their score. It was a good thing, too, as the mercy rule would certainly have come into effect. Still, our new guys (Don & Scott) both looked great, hitting homer’s and driving in a combined total of 5 runs. The challenge that remains for the regular season will be to get our defense up and running.
Name AVG Hits AB RBI Runs HR 2B 3B K Walks

That’s .625 Fast Eddy (unless I’ve got something recorded wrong). I’ll go back through over the weekend and double-check that the stats are all in here right, and I’ll try to figure out what’s going on with this friggin’ formatting. One thing’s for sure: some of our sleepier bats from last year have really come alive during Spring training, and our 3 off-season pick-ups are looking real good (for which I hope to at least be in the running for GM of the year come the Fall Banquet).

5/19 vs Total Destruction (double header)
Our season-opening double-header against the reigning league champions was a-wash in more ways than one. Game one started in the rain, with a soaking wet field and no stretch/warm-up time, as most of us doubted they’d be a game at all since it had been coming down all day. But the game did go on, until the sixth inning when our familiar foe from last season reared his ugly head: the mercy rule set in and we officially lost 15-3. We made a lot of solid connections with the ball, but all of them popped up, and most all of them were caught. Add that to the fact that it took us a good 3 or 4 innings to remember how to catch the ball, and it was an overall pretty weak performance from LSC.
In the second game, it was, unfortunately more of the same. Final score after a mere 5 1/2 innings: bad guys 13, us 1. The rain eventually let-up, but sadly, Totall Destruction’s defense did not. Not to make excuses, but over the course of both games we probably lost 5-7 hits on their stellar and consistent fielding, and there’s just nothing to be done about that.
Some bright spots certainly included great catches by veryiil’papi and Scott “tafari” Kerner, and LSC’s first home run of the year by Jake “Bruce! it’s for you!” Feldman. For my part, I didn’t get on base, didn’t back off when another fielder called me off the fly ball (though he did catch it) and a dropped, easy pop up that for some reason or another I decided to try and catch with my appendix. Also worth nothing was fast eddie’s stellar performance on the mound, giving his team the opportunity (which wasn’t cashed in on) of tons of pop-ups, and (I believe) a total of three strike outs over two games.

5/29 @ FSV
Friends, the waft of victory has gotten so thick that even vegetarians on the LSC softball team are ready for the BBQ. On a windy but beautiful early evening, we came heartbreakingly close to our well-overdue first victory. Behind an offensive charge that included my 1 run, 1 RBI first hit of the season and a 1 run, 3 RBI, 2-3 outing by the Cal Ripken, Jr of first-base, Dean, LSC headed into the last inning with a very impressive 6-1 lead over FSV. Sadly, it still wasn’t enough, as they scored seven runs in their final at-bats and dropped us to 0-3 on the season with an 8-6 loss.

5/29 vs Parker’s
Last season, LSC begin what may evolve someday into fun, heated rivalries with teams like McGilicudy’s and the Black Door- other bars in downtown that are quite natural foes. We also had a couple of somewhat simmering games with the team from Parker’s (a local gas station). Well folks, that rivalry ratcheted a few steps up last night.
Hyper-competitive, uber-machismo (not to mention sexist and homophobic), Parker’s has now cemented themselves in most of our minds as coming close to being everything that we collectively despise. Now, sober and away from the ballfield, I must say that, more than anything, I feel a bit sad and even compassionate towards these guys. I mean, that people can be so lost, so lonely, so bored in their lives that they revert to the level of immaturity of some of these guys is an unfortunate thing to see. And of course, it was really only a handful of them- most of their team seemed to be out there having fun, offering sincere words and condolences of our good game played and the level of improvement they saw in our playing from last year.
However, on the field, there are unwritten and unspoken codes of conduct, respect, and camaraderie. I’m not talking about any sort of backwards, limiting social constructs; I’m talking about good sportsmanship, a mutual understanding that we are, after all, just playing a game, and even a little bit of honor and dignity. For some of these guys though, it was about being a prick, calling people nasty names (none of us are opposed to some fun-and-games trash-talking, but come on!), and winning, winning, winning. That’s why going into the last inning and only being down 8-6 (they are, in fact, far more athletic, skilled, and experienced that us) was enough to bring a bead of sweat to their brows and a cheek-to-cheek grim on our faces.
Alas, they torched us for nine runs in that last inning, while our bats fell silent. Our fans, hands-down the best in the league in terms of numbers, enthusiasm, and shear volume, were anything but silent though. They contributed to an unbelievably fun evening that came as close to being as enjoyable as a win as one can get, without actually winning. Though at least two near-fights were instigated by the less-quality members of their team as we all lined-up to shake hands, in the end we had ten-thousand times more fun, even in losing 17-6, than they did or maybe ever will in a win against us. The rematch, by the way, is next Thursday at 8:30 (after our first game against Casella). Arrangements are already underway for our victory celebration afterwards…

great post, no holds barred.
i’ve already placed an order for some champagne for next weeks celebration. of course i mean the champagne of beers.
and to continue on the subject of uber-machismo/ultra competetive personalities. i proudly/embarrasingly have to admit i am one of those types when it comes to numbers reflecting my performance. so on that note, homeboy i’m missing one in the hit column, one in the 3B column and i believe one in the R column. you know i’ve got your back, because i’m looking over your shoulder.salute

p.s. is this what you were referring to describing people who might be so lost, lonely and bored that they give a rats ass about a game?

Verylil’papi- insisting that the *official* stats reflect the facts of our individual performance is anything but hyper-competitive or uber-machismo- it is the God-given right and archetypal manifestation of any once-eight-years-old boy who grew-up playing ball during the past 120 years. I’ll use this raining day to thoroughly re-examine the records and make all necessary adjustments. That triple you speak of though, I’m inclined to still count as an out, as you were thrown out trying to stretch it to home.
Lit- Bad News Bears, indeed. We are now 0 wins, 30 losses in our all-time existence in this league. I think you’re onto something with the hay bale-disco training sessions though; how about I buy your plane ticket and you come out here to be our trainer/motivational speaker? That would have the added bonus of doing away with everyone’s loneliness and boredom =}
Also, I appreciate everyone’s silence, as if I were the pitcher 2/3’s the way through a no-hitter, but there’s really no need to remain silent about the elephant in the room: I’m off to a horrible start! I hit around .500 all last year! 1-for-10!?! The rumor around the clubhouse is that instead of sending that case of beer over to FSV for our off-season trade for Scott, management is putting together on offer to send me over to them, plus $10 (the same rumor reports that FSV declined, but said they’d take the $10). If I can’t put together a break-out game next week, the coach is likely to bench me.

wyatts'parents
yo elephant there is no need to bench yourself , even if you are hitting .467 less than last year.you bring a lot of intangibles to our team(plus you bring the PBR,bats and a pen)
as far as Scott, I believe he was unrescricted free agent. there is no trade with FSV. don’t believe the rumors.
NOW DOWN TO BRASS TAX
you are right about me being out and you may be inclined to not count it. but if we look at 120 years a american ball playing and scoring,Officially it is 2-rbi triple 9-4-2 put out(rcf-2nd base throw to catcher.so you might also want to add a double to our speedy new leadoff man who also was tossed out that inning.(double 9-4-5 put out) that is rcf-2nd base-3rd base out.

6/5 vs Casella
Behind a pathetic 7 for 22 (.318 ) team effort behind the plate and what some are calling birthday-boy Fast Five’s worst pitching performance ever, LSC got mercy-ruled 20-1 against the lowly team from Casella’s. Not much more to say about this one folks, except “pppeeeeewwwwwww”. Let’s hope and pray not to have too many more like this.

6/5 @ Parker’s
The much-anticipated rematch from last week’s near Rumble in the Jungle turned out to be little more than hype. While Parker’s did manage to show quite a bit more class (and restraint from their mouths) than last week, LSC’s bats once again fell silent and the guy’s from Parker’s managed just a couple good innings against what was otherwise a fine defensive performance from LSC. The outcome, however, was familiar: we lost 10-0.

Not to make excuses of any sort, but as folks can see from the recently released League standings above, LSC has had to face the second and third best teams in the League for four of our first 6 games. And, not to worry, we’ll be sure to keep the expansion team- American Legion Post 63- behind us, where any expansion team belongs, as the season progresses.

wes no need to get down on the hitting, we all could stand to have our bats come alive, you will hit you groove again; hey, i was getting cranky last week when i couldn’t get a good connection with the ball, but we’re so far ahead of where we were a year ago, it’s gonna come together!

Just for the record…fast5eddy WAS sick that last game…
not making excuses, but sickness and injuries are usually noted when critiquing a performance…
DEFINATELY my worst pitching outing ever, though - I never walked in runs before!
Did get one strikeout on Parker’s though - giving me 3 for the year - I bet that leads the league…

OK, I’ll start by getting the facts out of the way, so that I can quickly move on to gloating, speculation, and rumors. As all of Montpelier now knows, we won our first game ever vs Everett’s! Not only did we win, but we blew them away, 20-8 in only six innings. For those paying attention, we came intot the game having scored less than 20 runs through our first six games. As a whole, we hit an incredible .518, led by Scott’s 4-5, 2 RBI 2 Run game, Don’s 4-4, 2 runs and 4 RBI’s, Jake’s 3-4, 1 HR, 3 runs and 3 RBI’s, and Lill’Papi’s HR, triple, 2 runs, and 4 RBI’s. We were also joined by Jason, a new pick-up, and he immediately made an impact bothe defensively and in going 2-2 with a double, a run, and 2 RBI’s.
In fact, we all played great offensively and defensively, and the score shows it. But it was the bottom of the sixth innings when, after allowing them to creap within 13 to 8, that we really exploded. Following Jake’s lead-off single, we went on to score 7 runs. The final one, which immediately preceded ump Joe Sweeney’s mercy rule call, came with two outs. Collin walked to load the bases, and Scott made good by driving a single and the final run in.
And now that we know how to, lets be sure that there are more victories to come. We play Everett’s again next week.
6/12 @ Cad Cut
Still high from our first win, we were one poor defensive inning away from victory number two. Unfortunetly, we did give Cad Cut one inning in which they blew us for ten runs, which was enough for them to win it, 15-9. Another new pick-up, Kevin, continued to prove that good General Manager’s don’t stop bringing in new talent just because the seasion’s underway. Kevin went 3 for 3 with a run, an RBI, and a catch in left field that had Jeff saying “it looks like I just lost my job” and the always enjoyable ump Sweeney saying “that was the most spectacular catch I’ve ever seen in this league”. Our chance to prove that we can beat high-quality teams like Cad Cuts comes next week, as the rematch follows our Everett’s rematch.
As readers may (or may not) be able to assertain from his comments above, Jim “Choo Choo”, “lill’papi”, “guy with the beard” Malloy sent his pinky finger pointing in the wrong direction as he tried to slide himself back onto second base towards the end of the game. So far he’s being listed as day-to-day by management, but our crack medical staff is keeping a close eye on the injury: lossing Jim for any substancial period could be too much for our momentum to overcome; plus, it may just be the thing to finally make his wife question how good of an influence I am on the guy.

secondly, our 1thru4 hitters against Everetts smacked in 13 RBIs, well done.

Clancy
Slugging percentage is the true measure of the power of a hitter. Total bases are divided by total at-bats. Each type of hit has a different value (Singles - 1, Doubles, 2, Triples 3, and HR 4).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slugging_percentage
The best measure of a hitter is the On Base Plus Slugging Percentage (OPS).

6/18 @ Everett’s
In the re-match against the only team we’ve ever won against, LSC demonstrated that it was not fluke: we can win games. Unlike last week’s pummeling, LSC’s bats we consistent but not explosive. The defense, however, showed its maturity and we held off a seventh inning comeback attempt to win our second game of the year, 9-8. Fast Five Eddie pitched a masterpiece, even catching one batter swinging for strike three. Dean went 4-4 with a run and an RBI, and for a while there, it just seemed like Jake was everywhere on the field at once, turning singles into doubles and making crucial put-outs from the field.
And despite the speculation, Lil’papi played and played well, even without his finger 100%.
Which was good, because in the first inning new pick-up Kevin went down with what looked like some serious hamstring/quad problems. I’ll get out the update as soon as I get it. Half an inning later I jammed my left thumb something good trying to tag out the sliding runner at second. It felt like an electric shock going up my arm: it’s swollen, bruised, and pretty certainly sprained. I’d say I hope it’s healed by next week, but, looking at the updated stats, and speaking with my coach’s hat on, I’ll just say: I’ll be back in the line-up when it’s completely healed.
6/18 vs Cad Cut
Game cancelled because the transformer blew on the lights. Make-up game will likely happen sometime in July. I’ll let you know.
And as for all you impatient stat-mongers: hey, despite what some may think, I do have to go to work! They’re updated now though- less than 24 hours later- so just settle down….

Scott “HoJo” Kerner is creeping up on me. I’m trying to win the batting title. Maybe I can play a little infield with your injury and Hojo being on hiatus for a few weeks.

Whoa Stache Mcgee who’ve got 13 LSC bangers right on your doorstep, I believe its a little early to talk about the batting title.
Maybe we should strive for .555 as a team.

I’m just trying to live up to being called a “key pickup.” It’s never too early to talk about a batting title, especially with such a short season.

Check the latest standings up top- we’re a week or two away from being middle of the pack! Someone should ask Stephanie next they see her at the Cafe how Kevin’s doing and get the news posted up here (I’m counting on you Fast Five); I don’t have a phone number for him.
In the meantime, I’m officially on the 10-day DL, retroactively beginning last Wednesday… this thumb is definitely not working properly.
Have fun out West Mud Shark. Mr Clark, any word on whether or not Jason will be able to make it the next few weeks?
June 21, 2008 at 12:46 am

I’m pretty sure that Jason will be able to make the next few games. He’s a good shortstop, and I can play 2B while you, our player/coach, rests your injured thumb.

6/25 @Casella
Zzzzzzzz…. That would be the sound of our offense, which slept through seven complete innings before losing 13-2 to the entirely beatable Casella’s team. For some reason, we just can’t seem to do anything against their ace pitcher Joe Mullins. Lil’Papi did manage a 3-3, 1 run game, but otherwise, there’s little to report here. I sat-out with my injured thumb and bruised rib, but looking at the season stats, we know that only helped our chances at the plate. Lets just hope that we either find an answer to these guy’s, or don’t have to face them in the playoff.s
6/25 vs Sarducci’s/Utton’s
This just may go down in history as the closest, most fun 12-run loss in softball history. In what was quite possibly our best single inning ever, we came out in the first against a very athletic S/U team and took a 7-1 lead, with all our guys getting to the plate and, in a LSC first, they went to their bullpen in the first inning following Colin’s monstrous 2-RBI triple. Unfortunately, we then went on to strand 11 runners and lose 23-11. Things got a bit heated in the fifth, with us down 19-9, when, with runners on first and second ump Sweeney (who was in a particularly light-hearted, jovial mood) called, a bit under his breath, an infield fly rule. The S/U player than made the somewhat weak choice of not bothering to catch it- in fact, moving out from under the ball. Our base-runners, who couldn’t even hear Joe’s call, panicked at the drop and took off, allowing them to grab an easy (and pretty weak) double-play.
I, for one, got a bit mouthy after that one. Sweeney made the right move by immediately calling the VT ASA commissioner, who insisted Joe made the right call. Not that it would have mattered much, being down so bad so late, but the whole play stunk pretty bad. To S/U’s credit, they were pretty tolerant of our shit-talking and our outrage.
Like I said above though, this game was much closer than the score shows, and we’ll be looking to pull-off the upset next time we meet these guys.
Of note were Ryan’s 2-4, 2 RBI, 1 run, 1 double performance, Clancy hitting 3-4 with 4 RBI’s, 1 run, and 1 double, and Jim’s 4-4, 2 run, 2 double game, which put him an impressive 7-7 on the night. Actually, pretty much everyone hit well. Also of note, our fans fucking kick ass. Once again, we had a loud, enthusiastic bleacher full of great support. Ump Sweeney remarked to me as they turned up the volume for the late-game rally (which we didn’t pull off): It’s like Langdon Street Nation whenever you guys play- jesus! Higgins should write an article on that“.
note: the printed schedule is the right one; I’ve fixed the one on this site and it should be right now too.

6/29 vs Computer Barn
It would be easy to make excuses for this game with our two top hitters (Lil’Papi and Clancy) out of town. However, the sad truth is that we managed to go only 7 for 21 in losing 12-0 in six innings- and 5 of those 7 hits came in the first two. Despite Fast Eddy pitching quite a gem and some seriously impressive defensive plays from Don at third, Jason at short and Borderpunk at first, the fact is that nearly all of our contact went right to them, and all (or, most) of their contact went right to the holes. With the lowest average of any of our starters and nearly .250 bellow what I hit last year, there are really no excuses for me, though for tonight mine is at least decent: I now know why the big leaguers take a shot of painkillers before they hit the field with something like a broken finger. Lets hope for Wednesday’s game we field enough guys so that this Pete Rose can sit- not only because my season-long slump is getting embarrassing, but also because my left thumb is literally twice the size of my right thumb right now.
As for the Black Door on Wednesday, I smell upset….
