Well, Guerin is the french equivalent to someone like Murray Bookchin. Almost every anarchist over 30 I know (and most younger one I know too) have read him at one point. You can still get a lot of his books in almost every used bookshop. When I was a teen, it was even in almost every highschool librairy.

Thanks for that Phebus; this was actually my first reading of anything of Guerin's, and his biography is something I knew little about other than some quick FAQ kind of things I've seen on the web. As for describing him as "New Left", I don't even know why I put that in here, but I took it from the back cover of the edition I have (Monthly Review Press)- "One of the ablest leaders and writers of the French New Left".

Nice review but I think I would object to the qualification of Guerin as a "New Left" author. After all, the guy became politicaly active in the 1930's (his first famous book was "Fascism & Big Business" and was published before WWII).

Also, about the objectivity of the book, one have to keep in mind the aim of the author. He admited latter that the book was really a pedagogic primer (a success considering the book have sold more then 100 000 copies in french and was translated in so many languages). Actually, 'Anarchism' was an editor demand and not an author urge (just like Rocker Anarcho-syndicalism BTW). When he first wrote it, he was in heavy reaction against marxism and was just rediscovering anarchism. He admit to have written something about "classical anarchism" and that he does not agree with most of what he write. Actually, not long after that he would describe himself as a libertarian marxists. He latter joinded the burgeoining platformist movement and would stay a due paying member of the UTCL (predecessor of AL) until his dead. If one wants to figure out what was Guerin political outlook, one would have to read one of the various version of "Pour le communisme libertaire" (a collection of essais that was first issued as "Jeunesse du marxisme libertaire", then re-issued with a bunch of other essais as "Pour le marxisme libertaire" and finaly revamped (with yet another bunch of essai) as "Pour le communisme libertaire"). Unfortunately, I dont think this book was ever translated in english.

Oh, one last note, 'Anarchism' is best read together with the 'Neigther God nor Master' anthology as most of the quoted text are in there in full.
